Discovery Tour 3: Unseen Thailand

7 days / 6 nights (Via the I-san to Chiang Mai)

Bangkok - Khao Yai - Korat - Udon Thani - Chiang Khan - Phitsanulok - Chiang Mai

A unique tour through East and Northeast Thailand. The I-San, as the Thai themselves call this area, is not yet visited much by Western tourists. The natural beauty, the fascinating architecture and the colorful villages continue to surprise you during this tour. From the I-san you travel further via Phitsanulok and Sukhothai to Chiang Mai.

Day 1: Bangkok - Khao Yai National Park (approx. 160 km)

You drive to the Khao Yai National Park, Thailand's most famous wildlife park and nature reserve. Following the main route through the park, you will stop at Heo Narok and Heo Suwat waterfalls, several viewpoints, and have lunch at the main park of the park. Along the way you will see exotic birds, deer and monkeys that are sometimes curiously waiting for passers-by! In the afternoon, arrive at your hotel, located near the north entrance of the national park.

Day 2: Khao Yai - Phanom Rung - Korat (approx. 240 km)

After breakfast you will drive to one of the most impressive Khmer temples in Southeast Asia, the “Prasat Hin Khao Phanom Rung”. The temple is built on the top of an elaborate volcano from which you have a beautiful view of Cambodia and the plateau of the I-san. After lunch, visit the artisan pottery village of Dan Kwian. You will stay 1 night in Korat.

Day 3: Korat – Phimai - Udon Thani (approx. 280 km)

You will visit the typical I-san village of Ban Prasat. Then you drive to Phimai where you take a walk through the Sai Ngam Park, the largest “Banyan Tree” in Thailand. Then you will visit the 'Angkor Wat of Thailand', the imposing Khmer castle built of sandstone and laterite, Prasat Hin Phimai. After lunch, you will visit the imposing Laotian-style Wat Nong Waeng Pagoda in Khon Kaen, which includes beautiful murals. In the pleasant city of Udon Thani you will stay 1 night in a centrally located hotel.

Day 4: Udon Thani – Nongkhai – Chiang Khan (approx. 240 km)

Drive to Nongkhai and visit the unique Sala Kaew Ku sculpture garden. During the walk in the park you will see a huge collection of imposing Hindu and Buddhist statues. Then you take a nice walk along the special cave and stone formations of the Phu Phrabat Natural Park. After lunch you will follow a beautiful route from Sang Khom along the border with Laos and the Mekong River to the town of Chiang Khan. Along the way you will make several stops to enjoy the view, including the Kaeng Khut Ku rapids in the Mekong River. You will stay 1 night in an attractive resort located on the Mekong River

Day 5: Chiang Khan – Dan Sai - Phitsanulok (approx. 170 km)

After breakfast you will see during a walk that the town of Chiang Khan has retained its authentic character with many wooden houses, narrow streets with shops, picturesque restaurants and its friendly atmosphere. Then you drive to the beautiful mountain lake of Huay Krating. Here you can take a trip on a "house raft" on which you can enjoy the surroundings "bobbing" and in peace. After lunch you will visit the idyllically situated village of Bo Klua, where time seems to have stood still. On the way to Phitsanulok you will take a walk to one of the waterfalls located in the Kek River. You will stay 1 night in Phitsanulok.

Day 6: Phitsanulok - World Heritage Sukhothai - Chiang Mai

In Phitsanulok you will visit Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat where you can admire one of the most beautiful and revered Buddha statues in the country, the Phra Phuttha Chinnarat. In the UNESCO-listed Sukhothai Historical Park, you can take a beautiful and relaxed bike ride along the many ruins and monuments, immense Buddha statues and serene lotus ponds. Sukhothai is considered the cradle of Thai civilization. After lunch, drive to Chiang Mai with a stop at the Mae Ta jungle market along the way. You will stay 1 night in Chiang Mai in a centrally located hotel.

Day 7: Chiang Mai

This tour ends after breakfast at your hotel. You can choose to extend this tour with one of our many extension options.
